Tree Care Guides For Gold Coast Gardens

Twelve long guides on the jobs people most often try themselves, and where they go wrong in this climate.

Where to start

If you are planning to remove anything, read the council approval guide first. On the Gold Coast that question decides whether the rest of the planning matters, and finding out afterwards is expensive.

Palms

Palms are their own subject. They have no branches, no ability to seal a wound the way a woody tree does, and a single growing point that ends the plant if you cut it. Nearly everything people believe about pruning trees is wrong when applied to a palm.

Moving trees rather than removing them

Sometimes the tree is fine and the position is wrong. Transplanting is genuinely possible in this climate if the species, the season and the root ball are right, and genuinely doomed if they are not.

Rules

When reading is not enough

If the tree is over a structure, near a powerline, or bigger than you can comfortably control, it is not a reading problem. See tree removal, lopping or emergency storm work, or ring (07) 5230 8034.

The cost guide explains what a professional job costs and why, and the FAQ deals with neighbours, powerlines and insurance.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Are these guides written for the Gold Coast specifically?

Yes. Subtropical Queensland conditions change the answers — the growing season barely stops, the wet season runs November to March, palms behave differently to trees, and council approval is a real constraint rather than a formality. Advice written for Melbourne or Sydney will get the timing wrong here.

Can I actually do this work myself?

Some of it. Small tree removal, replanting and light palm tidying at ground level are reasonable DIY jobs if you are honest about your gear and your fitness. Anything above head height, anything near a powerline, and anything where the tree could fall on a structure is not. Most home insurance will not cover DIY tree-work damage.

Which guide should I read first?

If you are planning any removal, start with the council approval guide — it determines whether the rest is relevant. If you are dealing with palms, the golden cane and palm stump guides cover the two jobs people most often underestimate.
