The clearing jobs here are concentrated on the western and southern fringe. Acreage at Guanaba, Maudsland, Mount Nathan, Gilston, Tallai, Bonogin and the valleys behind Currumbin and Tallebudgera. Larger rural residential lots around Ormeau, Pimpama and Upper Coomera being subdivided or built on. Occasionally a big suburban block where a knock-down rebuild needs an envelope cleared.
What they have in common is that the vegetation is not incidental. It is usually mapped, sometimes regulated, and occasionally a regional ecosystem that cannot be touched at all.
Establishing what can legally go
This is the entire job, done before the machines. Two layers apply.
The City of Gold Coast planning scheme applies a vegetation management overlay across substantial parts of the local government area, covering remnant bushland, riparian corridors along the creeks and the coastal dune systems. Work inside mapped vegetation generally needs a development approval, and the assessment looks at what is being removed, what is being retained and what is being replanted.
Above that sits state regulation. The Queensland Vegetation Management Act and the regulated vegetation management map classify vegetation as remnant, high-value regrowth or regulated regrowth, and clearing those categories needs its own approval or has to fit a specific exemption.

How the work is done
Small blocks are done with an excavator and a mulching head, or by felling with saws and running the material through a chipper. Larger areas use a forestry mulcher, which turns standing scrub into a mulch layer in one pass and leaves the soil surface intact — a real advantage on the steep hinterland ground where any exposed soil ends up in a creek after the first storm.
Stumps inside a building envelope are ground or excavated to whatever depth the engineer needs. Stumps outside the envelope usually stay, because leaving root systems in place on a slope is the difference between a stable batter and a slip.
Sediment control matters here more than people expect. A cleared hinterland block above Nerang Creek or Tallebudgera Creek in a January downpour moves a remarkable amount of soil, and the council takes that seriously.

Can I clear my own acreage block on the Gold Coast?
Not freely. Clearing is regulated at two levels — the City of Gold Coast planning scheme, including its vegetation management overlay, and the Queensland Vegetation Management Act for regulated regional ecosystems. A block that looks like scrub can still be mapped remnant or of concern vegetation. The mapping has to be checked against the lot before a machine moves, not afterwards.
What happens to the cleared material?
Usually it is mulched on site with a forestry mulcher or a tub grinder, and the mulch is either spread or stockpiled. That is normally cheaper than cartage and it puts organic matter back into the ground. Where the material cannot stay — a build starting immediately, or a weed species you do not want spread — it is chipped and carted.
Do you do firebreaks and fuel reduction?
Yes, on hinterland-fringe blocks where fuel load against a boundary is the concern. That work is understorey and ladder-fuel reduction rather than removing canopy trees, and it is usually the part of a block that can be worked without a clearing approval. The approval position still has to be checked for anything with a trunk.
Can you work around trees that have to stay?
Yes, and on most approved envelopes some trees are conditioned to stay. Retained trees need protective fencing at the structural root zone and machinery kept outside it, because compacting the soil over a root zone kills a tree slowly enough that nobody connects the two events. That fencing should be in the scope from day one.
