Both jobs end with a stump you cannot see. They leave very different ground behind.
Grinding turns the stump and the buttress roots into chip and leaves that chip in the hole. The result is soft, organic, and still settling for a year or two. It is perfect for turf, mulch or a garden bed, and it is quick, cheap and low-impact.
Removal takes the whole stump and the root plate out of the ground and carts it away. What is left is a proper excavation that can be backfilled with clean fill and compacted. That is what you need if anything is going to bear load on that spot.
The jobs that force the issue
Most stump removals on the Gold Coast are driven by a build, not by the stump itself. A pool going in on a Robina or Varsity Lakes block where an old fig stood. Footings for a granny flat or a second dwelling. A retaining wall on a sloping Nerang or Mudgeeraba site where the engineer's detail will not sit over decaying timber. New stormwater, sewer or conduit runs where a root plate is directly in the trench line.
The other trigger is species. Camphor laurel, celtis and cocos palms will all try to regrow from a stump. Grinding usually kills them, but where a stump has already been ground once and suckered again, digging it out ends the argument.
How the job runs
Services get located first. Dial Before You Dig plans cover the street assets; anything your landscaper ran — irrigation, pool plumbing, garden lighting — has to be marked by you, because an excavator bucket will find it the hard way.
Access is then assessed. The machine has to get in and the spoil has to get out, and on a typical Gold Coast suburban block that means a driveway wide enough for a bobcat and a tipper. If the only route is a 900mm side gate, the machine cannot come and the job changes shape.
Excavation goes around the root plate, the major roots are severed, and the plate is levered and lifted out whole. The hole is backfilled with clean fill and compacted to whatever level the next trade needs. Spoil and the stump leave on the truck.
Getting it priced
Trunk diameter at ground level, species, soil type, machine access and where the spoil can be stockpiled are the variables. Hinterland clay at Gilston or Tallai digs very differently from coastal sand at Palm Beach.

Frequently asked questions
When do I need removal rather than grinding?
When something structural is going into that ground. Footings for a shed, deck or extension, a pool shell, a retaining wall, or new sewer and stormwater lines all need genuinely clear soil. Grindings are loose organic material that keeps settling as it breaks down, so you cannot compact and build on them. If you are only turfing or planting, grinding is cheaper and less disruptive.
How much mess does full removal make?
A lot more than grinding. Digging out a root plate means an excavator or a bobcat, an excavation several times wider than the trunk, and spoil that has to go somewhere. Lawn, irrigation and paths in the machine's path will be damaged and should be treated as part of the job. Plan the reinstatement before the machine arrives, not after.
Can it be done by hand on a tight block?
Small stumps, yes. Anything with a substantial root plate on a block where a machine cannot reach — a canal-front courtyard, a unit block setback, a steep hinterland site — becomes an expensive hand-dig, and grinding with a narrow-access machine is usually the better answer. We will tell you which way the job falls when we look at it.
What do you do with the stump once it is out?
It leaves the site. A whole stump with a root plate on it cannot go through a chipper, so it goes on the truck as waste and is disposed of at a green waste facility. That cartage is part of why removal costs more than grinding, particularly for large-diameter figs and camphor laurels.
