Pruning is the part of tree work where technique shows up years later. A branch removed just outside the branch collar leaves a small raised wound that the tree walls off and grows over within a season or two in this climate. The same branch cut flush with the trunk removes the collar tissue that does the sealing, and the same branch left as a long stub gives decay a dead pathway straight into the stem.
Australian Standard AS 4373 exists to settle that argument. Every pruning cut we make follows it, and that is not a marketing line — it is the reason the tree is still sound in ten years.
The jobs people actually ask for
Crown lifting. Taking the lowest branches off so you can walk, mow, park or open a shed door underneath. Common on figs and poincianas that were planted too close to a driveway.
Crown thinning. Selectively removing internal branches so wind moves through the canopy instead of pushing against it. On the Gold Coast this is a genuine storm-season measure — a dense crown on a saturated root plate in a cyclonic wind region is how trees end up lying across driveways in January.
Deadwood removal. The single highest-value pruning job for risk. Dead branches are the ones that come down in ordinary weather. Mature eucalypts and figs accumulate them steadily.
Clearance pruning. Roof, gutter, solar array, pool fence, boundary fence and driveway clearance. Anything within the Energex exclusion zone is not touched by us and is referred to the network's vegetation program.
Formative pruning. Light structural work on young trees, mostly on new estates at Coomera, Pimpama and Ormeau where the landscaping is ten years old. Fixing a competing double leader now costs a fraction of dealing with the split it becomes.
Species behave differently
Figs tolerate pruning well and regrow fast. Poinciana takes reduction reasonably but resents heavy cuts into old wood. Mango fruits on new growth and responds well to post-harvest pruning. Eucalypts are the cautious ones — they compartmentalise decay poorly at large wounds, so on a gum the rule is small cuts, deadwood and clearance, not reshaping. Palms are not pruned at all in the ordinary sense; they get frond and seed-head removal, which is a different job.
What pruning cannot fix
A structural defect in the trunk. A failing root plate. Decay at a major union. Where any of those are present, reduction buys you very little and the sensible conversation is about removal instead. If a tree only needs load taken out of extended limbs, that is lopping and weight reduction.

What does AS 4373 mean in practice?
AS 4373 is the Australian Standard for pruning amenity trees. In practice it dictates where the cut goes: just outside the branch collar, not flush with the trunk and not leaving a stub. A cut in the right place lets the tree wall off the wound and grow over it. A flush cut or a stub leaves an opening that decay walks straight into.
Will pruning stop my tree dropping branches?
It reduces the odds, it does not eliminate them. Removing deadwood takes out the branches most likely to fall, and reducing end-weight lowers the load on long limbs. But healthy eucalypts shed live limbs in still, hot weather for reasons that have nothing to do with pruning, which is why you do not park under one on a 38-degree February afternoon.
How often should a tree be pruned?
Most established suburban trees on the Gold Coast need attention every two to four years, which is faster than southern states because the growing season barely stops. Trees near powerlines, over pools or beside driveways are on the shorter end. Young trees benefit from light formative pruning annually for the first few years, which prevents the structural problems that cost real money later.
Can you prune to give clearance for a new build or a shed?
Yes, within limits. Crown lifting and clearance pruning can free up several metres of working height. If the structure needs more clearance than the tree can give without losing a quarter of its crown, pruning is the wrong tool and the conversation turns to relocating the structure or removing the tree.
