A stump grinder is a wheel with carbide teeth that chews wood into chip. It takes out the stump and the buttress roots that flare out from it — the part that sits in the top 200 to 400mm of soil and causes the trouble. It does not chase the lateral roots out into the lawn, and it does not remove the deep root mass. For almost every domestic purpose that is enough: with the stump and the flare gone, you can turf, mulch, pave or put a garden bed over the top.
Where it is not enough is where something structural is going in. Footings for a shed or a deck, a pool shell, a retaining wall, or new plumbing all need genuinely clear ground, and that is stump removal — a different and more disruptive job.
Why leaving the stump is a bad idea on the Gold Coast
The climate here works against you. A stump left in a warm, humid subtropical garden goes soft quickly and becomes a food source. White ants find decaying stumps fast, and a stump three metres from a timber-framed house is an invitation you did not mean to send. Fungal fruiting bodies appear in the wet season. Many species — camphor laurel and celtis particularly — will throw suckers from a cut stump and try to become a tree again, which turns one job into an annual one.
Then there is the practical side. A stump is a mower hazard, a trip hazard, and the single most common reason a landscaping plan gets redrawn.
How the job runs
The crew locates the stump, clears the surrounding mulch and debris, and checks for the things that break teeth: embedded fencing wire, star pickets, concrete, and the river rock people love to ring stumps with. Grinding starts at the top and works down in passes, sweeping side to side. Buttress roots are followed out and taken down with the same machine.
Sand and grit around the stump — normal on the coastal strip from Main Beach to Coolangatta, where the ground is essentially dune — blunts teeth fast, so those jobs take longer than the same stump in hinterland clay at Nerang or Mudgeeraba.
Boards or mats go up where chip could reach a pool, a window or a car. The site is raked back and the grindings mounded over the hole unless you have asked for them out.
Getting it quoted
Diameter at ground level, species, access width and what is within a couple of metres are what determine the price. Photograph the stump with something for scale and ring (07) 5230 8034. Frequently asked questions
How deep does stump grinding go?
Standard is roughly 200 to 300mm below the surrounding ground level, which is enough to turf over or to lay a garden bed. If you are paving, pouring a slab or planting a replacement tree in the same spot, say so — that needs 400mm or more and sometimes a wider grind to catch the buttress roots, and it changes the machine and the time.
What happens to the hole and the grindings?
Grinding produces a surprising volume of chip and soil, usually far more than the stump appeared to hold. By default it goes back into the hole and is left mounded, because it settles as it breaks down. If you want it removed and the hole topped with clean soil, ask when the job is quoted — it is extra cartage.
Can the grinder get into my back yard?
It depends on the gate. Narrow-access grinders fit through an opening of about 750 to 900mm, which covers most Gold Coast side gates. If the only way in is over stairs, across a pool deck, or through a unit block's landscaped setback, the job may need a smaller machine, hand digging, or a lift — all of which affect the quote.
Do I need to do anything before the crew arrives?
Mark anything buried. Irrigation lines, pool plumbing, low-voltage garden lighting, gas and electrical conduits and septic lines all sit shallow in Gold Coast gardens and a grinder will not notice them.
