Approval and the overlay
The single most common question on the Gold Coast is whether a tree can legally come out, and the honest answer is that it depends on the lot rather than the suburb.
City of Gold Coast applies a vegetation management overlay through its planning scheme, and it maps remnant bushland, riparian corridors along the creeks and river systems, coastal dune vegetation and significant vegetated slopes. Two houses in the same street can sit differently against that mapping. On acreage west of the motorway, Queensland's regulated vegetation management map adds a second, separate layer.

Trees, neighbours and boundaries
Overhanging branches, dropped leaves in a pool, roots under a driveway and a view blocked by a neighbour's tree are the four recurring disputes. Queensland's Neighbourhood Disputes (Dividing Fences and Trees) Act provides a process, including a formal notice to the tree keeper and, if that fails, an application to QCAT.
Two things worth knowing. A view is not generally a right. And nothing in neighbour law overrides the council overlay — if the tree is protected, both of you are constrained.
Safety and what we will not do
We do not top healthy trees, we do not work on live conductors, and we do not remove protected vegetation without an approval in place. Any one of those is easy money and all three end badly.
Anything already fallen or hung up is emergency work and is handled differently — ring rather than emailing.

Ask for the qualification. Ask for a current certificate of currency for public liability. Ask whether the overlay position has been checked. Do I need council approval to remove a tree on the Gold Coast?
It depends on the lot, not the suburb. City of Gold Coast applies a vegetation management overlay across parts of the local government area, and trees inside mapped vegetation generally need a development approval before removal. Significant pruning can be caught as well. On hinterland acreage, state vegetation mapping may apply on top. We check the mapping before quoting.
What happens if I remove a protected tree without approval?
Enforcement action and a penalty, and it falls on the property owner as well as the contractor who did the cutting. Councils in south-east Queensland do prosecute, and the fines substantially exceed what the tree work would have cost. Replacement planting is also commonly ordered. Check first; it takes a phone call.
Can I cut branches that hang over my fence from next door?
In Queensland you can generally prune overhanging branches back to the boundary at your own cost, and the Neighbourhood Disputes Resolution Act sets out a formal notice process for asking the tree keeper to do it. That right does not override the council overlay — if the tree is protected, the boundary rule does not help you. Talk to your neighbour first.
What do you do about trees near powerlines?
Nothing, while they are near a live conductor. Work within the exclusion zone of an Energex line is restricted to authorised crews, and anything in contact with a line is reported to Energex on 13 19 62 so the supply can be isolated. Once it is safe and legal, the tree work proceeds normally.
What happens to the branches and the timber?
Branches go through the chipper on site and the chip leaves on the truck, unless you want it dropped on the garden beds — that costs nothing and saves you buying mulch. Trunk wood is cut into rounds and removed. If you want firewood lengths left stacked, say so before the crew starts so they cut to length.
Does my insurance cover storm tree damage?
Usually where a tree has damaged an insured structure, but terms vary and most insurers want photographs taken before anything is moved. Removing a tree that has not damaged anything is generally treated as maintenance and is not covered. Photograph from several angles before the saw starts if you intend to claim.
