Removal is the last option on the list, not the first. A tree that is structurally sound and in a sensible position is worth keeping — it shades the house, it holds the bank together, and on the Gold Coast it is often worth more to the property than the paving under it. Removal makes sense when the tree is dead, when decay or a structural defect has made failure likely, when the root plate is lifting a slab or a driveway, or when the tree is simply in the footprint of something that has to be built.
The other common trigger here is species. Camphor laurel and Chinese celtis turn up constantly in older Gold Coast gardens, both weed-listed and both routinely planted too close to footings. Cocos palms seed everywhere and end up in the fence line. Those removals are usually straightforward.
Checking the approval position first
Before pricing the work we establish whether the tree is protected. The City of Gold Coast planning scheme applies a vegetation management overlay across large parts of the local government area — the hinterland fringe, the coastal dune systems, remnant bushland pockets and riparian corridors inside ordinary suburban streets. Trees inside mapped vegetation can require a development approval to remove. Some individual trees carry additional protection.
Operational works and permit conditions also travel with newer estates: a lot of the Coomera, Pimpama and Ormeau housing stock was released with covenants or approval conditions that require particular trees to stay. We identify the species, look at the overlay mapping for the lot, and tell you plainly whether you are looking at an exemption, an application, or a tree that is not coming out. How the removal is done
Where there is a clear drop zone the tree is felled in one piece and processed on the ground. That is the cheap version and it is rare on suburban Gold Coast blocks.
Far more often it is a sectional dismantle. A climber sets a line, works the tree from the top down, and each limb is rigged and lowered rather than dropped. Under that limb is usually a pool, a colorbond fence, an air-conditioning condenser or a neighbour's pergola. On canal-front blocks at Broadbeach Waters, Mermaid Waters and Hope Island the drop zone is often water, which adds retrieval to the job.
Where the block will take machinery, an elevated work platform or a crane speeds everything up. Where it will not — a 900mm side gate, a steep fall at Tallai or Currumbin Valley, stairs down to a gully — everything goes out by hand or by barrow and the price reflects it.

Frequently asked questions
Will you remove a tree without council approval?
No. If a tree is protected under the City of Gold Coast planning scheme, its vegetation management overlay, or a covenant on the title, it cannot be removed until an application is decided. We check the overlay mapping and the species first and tell you where you stand. Removing a protected tree is an offence and the penalty falls on the property owner as well as the contractor.
How is a tree taken out when there is no room to fell it?
It is climbed and dismantled. A climber works up the stem, removes limbs progressively and lowers them on rigging ropes to a groundie, then takes the trunk down in short sections. It is slower than felling and it is the reason a tree beside a pool costs more than the same tree in a paddock. Where a crane or elevated work platform can stand, that is often faster and cheaper again.
What is left behind after removal?
The stump, unless you have asked for it to be ground or dug out. Branches are chipped on site and carted, trunk wood is cut into rounds and removed, and the area is raked. Grindings from a stump job stay on site by default because they are bulky; say if you want them removed.
Do you remove trees touching powerlines?
Not while they are in contact with a live conductor. Work near Energex lines is restricted, and anything touching a line is reported to Energex so the supply can be isolated or the line vegetation team can attend. Once it is safe and legal to work, the removal proceeds normally.
